Recently, Hebei Huayangsteelpipe Co., Ltd. held a unique Zongzi - making competition to celebrate the Chinese traditional festival, the Dragon Boat Festival. This event not only enriched the employees' leisure life but also provided an opportunity for foreign colleagues to gain a deeper understanding of the charm of Chinese traditional culture. On the event day, the company was filled with joy and laughter as employees from different departments gathered to participate in this interesting competition.

The Origins and Traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, Double Fifth Festival, and other names, is one of the four major traditional festivals in China, with a history of more than 2,500 years. There are many theories about its origin, and the most well - known one is that it commemorates Qu Yuan, a poet of the Chu State during the Warring States Period. In 278 BC, the Qin army captured the capital of the Chu State. Witnessing the invasion of his homeland, Qu Yuan was heartbroken and threw himself into the Miluo River with a stone in his arms on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Legend has it that after Qu Yuan's death, the people of Chu were extremely grief - stricken. They flocked to the banks of the Miluo River to pay their respects, rowed boats to drive away the fish in the river to prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body, and threw rice balls and other food into the river. These actions gradually evolved into the customs of dragon boat racing and eating Zongzi.

Besides commemorating Qu Yuan, there are other origin stories for the Dragon Boat Festival. In the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, some believe that the festival commemorates Wu Zixu from the Spring and Autumn Period. Fu Chai, misled by slander, ordered Wu Zixu to commit suicide and threw his body into the river in a leather bag on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. In addition, in eastern Zhejiang, the Dragon Boat Festival is regarded as a day to honor Cao E, a filial daughter. Cao E was from Shangyu in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Her father drowned in the river, and after several days, his body was still missing. She threw herself into the river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and retrieved her father's body five days later. Her filial piety moved everyone deeply.

The Dragon Boat Festival was originally closely related to the summer season. The ancient Chinese regarded the fifth lunar month as the "unlucky month" and the fifth day of this month as the "unlucky day", believing that "when the Dragon Boat Festival comes, the five poisonous creatures wake up". The five poisonous creatures refer to snakes, scorpions, centipedes, geckos, and toads. To avoid these "five poisons", people on this day would insert mugwort and calamus, wear fragrant sachets, and take herbal baths to maintain personal and environmental hygiene and prevent harm from pests. Therefore, the Dragon Boat Festival is also regarded as China's earliest "health and epidemic prevention festival" and "medical and health care festival".
