Grade A:

Grade A black steel pipe typically has a maximum carbon content of 0.25% and a manganese content ranging from 0.95% to 1.44%. These pipes are designed for general structural and mechanical applications and are typically specified for low pressure fluid transfer and non-critical industrial uses.

Grade B:

Grade B black steel pipe has a higher carbon content than Grade A pipe, with a maximum carbon content of 0.30%. Grade B pipe has a manganese content ranging from 0.29% to 1.06%. These pipes are suitable for more demanding applications including high-pressure fluid transfer, structural components and mechanical systems that require increased strength and durability.

Manufacturing Process of Black Steel Pipe

Slitting line stage:

The manufacturer will put hot rolled steel coils into the slitting machine to cut the steel sheets into small widths.

Rolling:

Then the slitting steel will be moved through the clusters and cages to flatten and chamfer on both sides, making the steel surface uniform in size.

Shaping:

Next is the shaping stage, the steel strip then goes through a series of grooved rollers arranged parallel to both sides, as the steel moves towards the end, their shape will gradually be rolled to form a cylindrical shape.

Welding black steel pipes:

This is the step that requires the most technical machines because the joint line will greatly determine the durability of the black steel pipe in the future. The steel pipe will pass through a roller arranged above to create extremely strong friction on the groove. At the same time, both the inside and outside of the pipe are also sprayed with hot zinc to avoid the risk of rusting the joints.

Quality check:

Once the steel pipes have been successfully shaped, they will now go through the cutting machines to complete the final stage. Black steel pipes go through modern gauges to compare technical information as required to ensure the stability and quality of the finished product before being put on the market.

Welding Methods of Black Steel Pipe

API 5L Seamless Black Steel Pipe

TIG welding:

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a versatile method that can be used on black steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It produces high quality welds with little spatter.

Stick arc welding:

Also known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), this method uses a stick-shaped electrode to create an electric arc that melts the metal.

Butt-welding:

This method involves welding the beveled ends of pipes together.

Hardness Test of Black Steel Pipe

Brinell hardness (HB)

Use a steel ball or cemented carbide ball with a certain diameter to press into the surface of the sample with the specified test force (F), remove the test force after the specified holding time, and measure the indentation diameter (L) on the surface of the sample. The Brinell hardness value is the quotient of the test force divided by the surface area of the indentation spherical. Expressed in HBS (steel ball), the unit is N/mm2 (MPa).

Rockwell hardness (HR)

The Rockwell hardness test, like the Brinell hardness test, is an indentation test method. The difference is that it measures the depth of the indentation. That is, under the successive action of the initial test force (Fo) and the total test force (F), the indenter (cone or steel ball) is pressed into the surface of the sample, and after the specified holding time, the main force is removed.

Vickers hardness (HV)

Vickers hardness test is also an indentation test method, which is to press a regular quadrangular pyramid diamond indenter with an angle of 1360 opposite sides into the test surface with a selected test force (F), and remove the test after a specified holding time. Force, measure the length of the two diagonals of the indentation.

Application of Black Steel Pipe

• Black steel pipes are often used to transport gas or to protect electrical wires and pipes that transport high steam and air.

• Black steel pipes are also used in the petroleum and petroleum industries to transport large amounts of oil through remote areas.

• Other uses for black steel pipes include gas distribution inside and outside the house, wells and sewage treatment systems. However, because black steel pipes are easy to corrode water, they are never used to transport drinking water, and the minerals in the steel pipes will dissolve into the water and block the pipes.

FAQ

Q: What are the grades of black steel pipes?

A: Grade A pipes are suited for general structural and low-pressure applications, while grade B pipes offer increased strength and resilience, making them suitable for more demanding industrial, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

Q: What are the applications of black steel pipe?

A: Black steel pipe is commonly used in a variety of industrial applications, including pipelines, construction and infrastructure projects. Black steel pipe is generally seamless pipe. When comparing grade a and grade b black steel pipe, it is important to consider their differences in chemical composition, mechanical properties and specific applications.

Q: What is the difference between black steel pipe and galvanized steel pipe?

A: Black steel pipe and galvanized steel pipe have a clear difference in cost because in the production process, manufacturers have to perform additional galvanizing steps for steel, so the cost to sell to the market will be higher than that of black steel pipe. In addition, during time for implementing the construction or commercial buildings, galvanized steel pipes will never be connected to black steel pipes.

Q: Is black steel pipe stronger than galvanized?

A: Black and galvanized steel pipes are both made of steel, but galvanized pipes have a zinc coating while black pipes do not. Therefore, galvanized pipes are more expensive and more durable.

Q: What is the ASTM standard for black steel pipe?

A: ASTM A53 is the standards specification covers seamless and welded, black and hot-dipped galvanized nominal (average) wall pipe for coiling, bending, flanging and other special purposes and is suitable for welding. A53 bare steel pipe sizes are specified by two non-dimensional numbers.

Q: What is the hardness of black steel pipe?

A: AISI 1045 steel is medium-tensile steel supplied in a black hot-rolled or normalized condition. Its tensile strength is 570 - 700 MPa, and Brinell hardness ranges between 170 and 210.

Q: Can black steel pipe be welded?

A: You can weld black "iron" pipe because it's made of mild steel, not iron. Black steel pipe can be welded using any welding method used for steel. This includes MIG, flux core, TIG, and stick arc welding.

Q: Is black steel pipe seamless?

A: Black steel piping is mainly used to carry gas into commercial buildings. This pipe is seamless, and this makes it perfect for carrying gas. Also, this pipe is more fireproof than carbon steel piping. Therefore it is also used in fire sprinkler systems.
